One Day Private Guided Tour, South Gate, Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Prohm & Angkor Wat

These temples were built from the 9th to 12th centuries by a Khmer empire that controlled not only Cambodia but large parts of what are now Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. With their grandeur of scale and extraordinary meticulous engineering detail, the temples rank among humankind's most supreme artistic expressions.

11 July - 5 pm: You will be transferred by bus to Phnom Penh airport

11 July - 7 pm: You fly to Siem Reap on Cambodia Airways

11 July - 8 pm: You will be transferred by bus to the Borei Angkor Hotel Our hotel

12 July - 8 am: After a superb included breakfast, you will be met by your personal guide and driver spend the early morning visiting the ancient capital of Angkor Thom (12th century). You will see the South Gate with its huge statues depicting the churning of the ocean of milk (this is ancient Cambodian lore which you will learn about at the banquet dinner). Next, you will visit: Bayon temple (this is unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avolokitesvara), Baphuon (recently re-opened after years of restoration), the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Elephants Terrace, and the Terrace of the Leper King. Next, you will continue to Ta Phrom. Built in 1186, Ta Phrom was dedicated to the mother of Jayavarman VII. Its atmospheric dark gray sandstone towers and courtyards exude an aura of reverence and mystery. Unlike most of the other inner temples of Angkor, Ta Phrom has been left to the elements and looks very much as it must have when "discovered" by Henri Mouhot in the 1860s (photo below). Navigating through its narrow passages, immense kapok trees and jungle-covered ruins is an unparalleled experience and one of the highlights of Angkor.

12 July 12 pm: Enjoy Lunch at a Favourite Local Restaurant (included)

12 July 1 pm: In the afternoon and sunset hours (if you have the stamina), explore Angkor Wat, the largest and most breathtaking monument at Angkor. Built as the funeral temple for King Suryavarman II, who ruled from 1112 to 1152, Angkor Wat never fails to reward the first time, or repeat, visitor with its grand scale, surreal bas reliefs and unbelievable attention to detail.

12 July 4-6:30 pm (depending on energy levels): return to the hotel

12 July 8 pm: explore the fascinating and high energy experience of the Night Markets. This is a great place to sample some local delicacies - more of the Tarantula if you missed it, plus some chocolate covered scorpions, and more. Also, sample hand-made tubular ice cream, have your toes nibbled by fish, or have an amazing full body massage for $1. This is also a great place to eat, and sample a variety of beer and drinks on Beer Street. Travel to the night markets will be by Tuk Tuk for $2.

12 July - leave for the comfort of your bed whenever you have had enough.

13 July 9 am: After another delicious breakfast head to the airport and fly back to Phnom Penh. We will aim to arrive at the airport in Phnom Penh at 11 am (to be confirmed).
