Visa Information

If you are presenting your paper only virtually and not attending the conference in person, you don't need a visa

In general, visitors to the USA need to know the following key information about visa requirements:

  1. Types of Visitor Visas:

    • B-1 visa for business visits.

    • B-2 visa for tourism, pleasure, or medical treatment.  <-- apply for this to attend the conference

    • Combined B-1/B-2 visa for both business and tourism purposes.

  2. Visa Waiver Program (VWP): See  Visa Waiver Program for current information.  In general, 

    • Citizens of 42 countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program can travel to the US for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. They include the following:

    • These travelers must obtain an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before traveling.

    • ESTA is valid for two years or until the passport expires, allows multiple entries, and costs $21 to apply.

    • The VWP only applies if traveling by approved commercial carriers; private boats or planes require a standard visa.

  3. If you need a visa, here are the Visa Application Requirements:

    • Valid passport with at least six months' validity beyond the intended stay.

    • Completed online application form DS-160.

    • A recent digital photograph that meets government specifications.

    • Proof of financial means to cover the trip.

    • Evidence of strong ties to the home country (job, family, property) to show intent to return.

    • Pay the visa application fee ($185 for most visitor visas, plus a possible new $250 visa integrity fee starting fiscal year 2025).

    • Schedule and attend a visa interview at a US Embassy or Consulate (generally required for ages 14-79).

    • Provide fingerprints during the visa interview.

    • Additional documents may be requested by consular officers.

  4. Visa Interview:

    • Typically required except for applicants under 14 or over 79 or some renewal cases.

    • May be done at the home country embassy/consulate or, with some difficulties, in a third country.

  5. Visa Duration:

    • Visitor visas can be valid up to 10 years with multiple entries allowed.

    • The length of each stay is determined by US Customs and Border Protection officers on arrival, usually up to six months.

  6. Upon Entry:

    • A Form I-94 is issued electronically, recording arrival and expected departure.

    • Visitors must comply with visa terms and leave by the authorized date.

  7. Visa Integrity Fee:

    • Starting fiscal year 2025, a new $250 "visa integrity fee" applies to most B-1/B-2 visa applicants, payable at visa issuance.

    • This fee may be refundable if the visitor complies with visa terms, but exact refund procedures are unclear.

  8. If a visa is denied:

    • The application fee is non-refundable.

    • Information is available on how to appeal or check eligibility for waiver of inadmissibility.
