This case study examines the leadership transformation of Vince Hafeli, President of Ajax Paving Industries, through the lens of trauma, resilience, and purpose-driven leadership. Based on three narrative interviews analyzed using qualitative coding, the study highlights five themes: psychological safety, suicide awareness and prevention, personal and professional transformation, emotional vulnerability, and leading with purpose. Hafeli’s story demonstrates how personal adversity can catalyze systemic change, particularly in male-dominated, high-risk industries such as construction. By reframing vulnerability as strength, embedding mental health initiatives, and championing psychological safety, he models a new leadership archetype that integrates empathy with performance. The analysis situates his journey within sustainable career theory, emphasizing how agency, meaning, and social support contribute to resilience and long-term career sustainability. The findings provide managers and leaders with practical insights into building inclusive cultures, addressing mental health proactively, and aligning leadership with values that both save lives and strengthen organizations.
